Town Planner, Edinburgh
The Role:
Ironside Farrar are looking for a well-rounded and ambitious Town Planner to join our team, based in Edinburgh. The role offers the opportunity for a graduate or recently qualified planner to take the next step in their career and have a prominent role within a successful team delivering projects across Scotland.
Planning is one of the core disciplines of the Practice and our team is involved a wide variety of work across Scotland - from very local, community-based, place planning to strategic masterplanning for nationally significant sites and major energy transition projects.
Qualities & Attributes:
The successful candidate is likely to be a recent graduate or a planner with 1-2 years experience, with a Bachelors (or Masters) Level Degree in planning or a related field, though applications are welcome from candidates of all backgrounds and circumstances. Key attributes and skills we are looking for include:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills – capable of producing high-quality reporting
- Excellent analytical and research skills – with ability to review, interpret and summarise policy or wider sources of data and information.

Roles & Responsibilities:
The role requires a motivated planner capable of working independently as well as collaborating with staff at all levels and liaising with clients and other stakeholders. Key roles and responsibility will include:
- Assisting in the preparation of planning applications, reports and assessments and over time taking a leading role in coordinating this with clients and project teams.
- Conducting a wide range of research and analysis to support planning / masterplanning projects
- Client and stakeholder liaison across all projects, including in-person and virtual meetings
- Coordinating, managing, and attending public consultation events.
- Collaborating multi-disciplinary project teams (internally and externally) on project delivery
- Building and maintaining a sound understanding of evolving policy, legislation, and industry trends – and communicating this to the wider Team and to clients.

Senior Planning Monitoring Officer and Environmental Auditor
The Role:
Ironside Farrar are looking for an enthusiastic senior PMO to join our award-winning Edinburgh practice.
Ironside Farrar are sector leading in the delivery of specialist Planning Monitoring Officer (PMO) services to support Scottish Government (Energy Consents Unit) and Local Planning Authorities and individual developers. The requirement for a PMO is a typical requirement of major energy consents as well as other major / long term projects to oversee compliance with environmental and planning conditions. Our environment team is currently providing PMO services on a range of projects including:
- Broken Cross Windfarm, South Lanarkshire
- Inverary to Crossaig Overhead Line, Argyll and Bute
- Cononish Gold Mine, Tyndrum, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs NP
- Sneddon Law Windfarm, East Ayrshire
- Duntilland Quarry, North Lanarkshire
The role involves regular (minimum monthly and sometimes weekly) site visits to projects across Scotland as well as environmental review and audit of documents (e.g. EIA and documents submitted to discharge planning conditions). Our PMO team need to be confident on site and in construction environments so a level of site experience is essential. The role may suit an ECOW looking to broaden their scope.
The successful applicant will work alongside our existing experienced PMO team on a range of existing commissions. We would support the successful applicant in achieving a lead environmental auditor qualification in line with ISO 14001.
Your Experience:
- Appropriate degree in an environmental or related subject such as geography, planning, ecology, environmental sciences, environmental engineering or related discipline
- Experience on construction sites and providing environmental advice
- Membership of relevant professional institution at an appropriate level
- Must hold a full clean driving licence and be willing to travel to sites across Scotland
Your Skills:

Landscape Architect / Planner (Edinburgh)
The Role:
Ironside Farrar are looking for an enthusiastic landscape architect or landscape planner to join our award-winning Edinburgh practice.
The successful applicant will deliver Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) alongside our environmental planning and design teams on a number of high profile and challenging projects. The role will also involve providing early landscape planning and landscape frameworks as part of masterplanning commissions and increasingly working closely with colleagues to integrate a ‘landscape led’ approach. We are also involved in other forms of landscape planning advice and assessment for a range of clients and project types in Scotland and the UK.
We are driven to secure best landscape and environmental outcomes from all our commissions and work closely with other professionals in delivery of a portfolio of projects for private and public sector clients across a diverse range of developments including energy, minerals, transport and urban development as well as input to strategic planning and assessment.
You will bring a willingness to learn, fresh ideas and contribute fully to multi-disciplinary teams and projects. You must have an excellent standard of written communication and presentation and enjoy a fast paced and varied workload.
Your Experience:
- A degree or diploma in landscape architecture
- You may be a graduate with an interest in landscape planning, or have several years of experience including chartership and proven experience and aptitude in landscape planning
- Membership of The Landscape Institute at an appropriate level
- Full clean driving licence
Your Skills:
- Articulate with very strong written and graphic communication style, preferably with experience of producing robust professional reports, graphics and good presentational skills
- A working knowledge of computer applications including Word, CAD, Photoshop, GIS
- Able to work independently and as part of a mixed discipline team, including undertaking field work and travel (Full driving Licence required).
- Enthusiastic with a ‘can do’ approach with good organisational skills /time and workload management.
