Project Description

Ravenscraig or ‘The Craig’ is a large (7-hectare), modern play park located on the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The park opened in 2021 and is a popular destination for families with children of all ages.

The 6500m² play area forms the focus to investment providing a regional standard facility for play. ‘The Mini-Craig’ play area is a play landscape with topographically shaped rubber crumb play surface encouraging imaginative play. A wide variety of play equipment elements is provided including a soaring climbing tower and slide, ziplines, trampolines and swings. An integrated sensory garden links traditional and natural play areas. The park is served by a new kiosk and WC.

The play facility is supported with well-developed access and connections to visitor facilities, public transport, active travel routes and parking making it an attractive family destination. Pump track/skatepark facilities are also included to broaden audience and interest group appeal.

The park delivers a network of wide paths for walking, wheeling, running and play; enclosing a greenspace and connecting the parks outdoor gym; ‘The Mini-Craig’ play area; sensory garden; kiosk and WC; and a feature path and interpretive element aligned on the line of the historic steel strip mill.

The park forms strong connections to the regional sports centre and the emerging Ravenscraig regeneration developments.
