Bathgate Town Centre Urban Design Framework

West Lothian Council / Enterprising Bathgate

Project Description

Practical guidance document developed to provide consistent improvement in the quality of Bathgate Town Centre's townscape and public realm. It consists of design guidelines to inform development proposals and development management decision-making, a design framework integrating various short to long-term strategy proposals, and guidance on the delivery and prioritization of these proposals. The document has been adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance (January 2009).

Main Components

An urban design/townscape appraisal was carried out, together with a review of relevant local and national planning policies, to inform the 'Vision and Strategy' put forward for the town centre. Key design principles follow from this and translated into more specific design guidelines for development management purposes. A design framework for the public space network proposes and prioritises specific projects and strategies for implementation.
